“Language and Math” with Amy Kuhl Cox
Montessori children learn phonetically, focusing on letters’ sounds rather than letters’ names. In this way, children become increasingly aware of the sounds in speech they hear every day. Using the moveable alphabet, children actually learn to “encode” words by spelling them out before realizing that they have the ability to “decode” words by reading. This workshop will cover ideas for cultivating your own child’s phonetic awareness. We will also explore the well-designed Montessori mathematics materials in our classrooms. You will have a sneak peak into materials teaching one-to-ten numeration, one-to-one correspondence, and linear counting up to 9999. Children are able to explore all four operations in the Montessori Primary environment: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
